'Breaking Dawn' Casting News: Rami Malek To Play Benjamin

image

The rumormill has been churning for months, speculating on just who will be joining the highly anticipated two-part finale of “The Twilight Saga” (remember those Lee Pace whisperings?). Well today, courtesy of ET Online, we have confirmation of one new “Breaking Dawn” face: “The Pacific” star Rami Malek. Rami will be playing vampire Benjamin, and, unsurprisingly, he’s super-psyched to be joining the franchise. “I think it’s going to be great,” he told ET. “It’s going to be super-exciting, and I’m thrilled.”

You’ll recall from the novel that Benjamin is a member of the Egyptian coven summoned by Carlisle to help battle the Volturi at the end of “Breaking Dawn.” Benjamin’s special vamp ability is controlling the elements, though he has yet to fully master his powers. He’s described as a young-looking vampire with dark hair and olive skin.

Rami looks to be a great fit for this role. Though he’s nearly 30 (29, to be exact), he oozes a boyish presence, and he certainly has the olive complexion and dark hair necessary to pull off the role physically. Plus, did we mention he has experience playing an ancient Egyptian in the “Night at the Museum” flicks?

What do you think about Rami being cast in the role of Benjamin in “Breaking Dawn”? Can any of you “Pacific” fans attest to his acting chops?

The Ultimate Battle Begins: Robstens vs. Nonstens by @theawfultruth

Sure, the fight between Team Robsten and Team Nonsten has been raging on the boards (and Twitter too) since the beginning of time—or at least since Twilight—but now it’s time to really see which side has more support.

How so, you ask?

By taking it to Facebook, of course. This seems to be the reason the site was invented, after all. Who cares about keeping in touch with friends and family? It’s all about showing support for R.Pattz and K.Stew (or your lack of support, if you’re one of them).

So if you celebrated the joyous Robsten Day and almost passed out when they swapped spit on camera, get your mouse clicking and “Like!” the Team Robsten page. Spread the word too—not that I need to tell you all twice.

And if you’re one of those downers who think the duo is strictly a PR stunt, or one who would rather see Rob with Nikki Reed (or Reese Witherspoon?) or Kristen with Garret Hedlund, TomStu or—gag—Taylor Lautner, then stop bitchin’ and get your butt over to the Team Nonsten page.

See you on Facebook (you’ve been checking out my F.B. page for frequent goss, too, right?). Be sure to check back for the big celebration when Team Robsten slaughters pitiful Team Nonsten.

Ah oh! E! Online’s Round Three King of Summer – Robert vs. Leonardo DiCaprio!

Apparently, Rob kicked Alexander Skarsgård’s (True Blood) butt in Round Two!

But the fiercest competition was between our two remaining vamps: Robert Pattinson and Alexander Skarsgård. At first, things were, um, neck and neck between the two, but Pattz ultimately pulled away, grabbing 62 percent to Skars’ 38.

Betty White Responds to Rob’s Suggestion to Be in Breaking Dawn?

Remember when we floated the idea that Betty White should be in Breaking Dawn because she seems to be in everything else these days?

Not only did Robert Pattinson like the suggestion, but so did a lot other Twilight VIPS, including Stephenie Meyer, Kellan Lutz and Peter Facinelli.

And what about Betty? Is she game? Here’s what she told me yesterday on the Emmy red carpet…

“I don’t think so,” she said.

Oh, no! Is Betty White a Twi-hater?

No!

“My schedule is so full,” she explained. “I can’t book anything more.”

“Eclipse” Box Office Update: 2M from 300M Mark

image

UPDATE MONDAY, AUGUST 30:

ACTUALS ARE IN: The final domestic box office numbers for its ninth weekend show that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse finished in 22nd place with $514,653 from 476 locations for a per theater average of $1,081. This represents a decrease of 9.2% from the previous weekend of August 20-22. The cumulative domestic total is now $298,027,752 after 61 days in release. Adding in overseas returns of $380.6M (the last reported number) gives Eclipse a current worldwide total of $678,627,752.

The daily breakdown, with percent change from the previous day, includes Friday’s $148,672 for a per theater average of $312 (+101.5%), Saturday’s $217,338 for a per theater average of $457 (+46.2%), and Sunday’s $148,643 for a per theater average of $312 (-31.6%). Overall, the 3-day weekend of August 27-29 was down 45.5% from the 3-day weekend of August 20-22.

For those comparing the films in The Twilight Saga, in its ninth weekend New Moon came in at #16 with $928,939 from 724 theaters for an average of $1,283, representing a decrease of 45.5% from weekend eight. Eclipse is at #22 with $514,653 from 476 locations for an average of $1,081, representing a decrease of 9.2% from weekend eight. In cumulative domestic totals over time, at this point in its release history (after 61 days) New Moon had taken in $292,509,377. Eclipse is now at $298,027,752. Both films hit the $250M mark on the 16th day. The total domestic gross for New Moon was $296,623,634. Eclipse has now broken that total by $1,404,118. The film is now within striking distance of the elusive $300M mark. It needs about $1.97M to get to that number. It took New Moon 18 more days to earn an additional $1.97M after its 61st day, and Eclipse is clearly doing better. On the other hand, New Moon was in 724 theaters after 61 days while Eclipse is at 476 locations. Still, even after New Moon’s theater count had dropped to 444 (after 63 days) it still went on to take in another $3.8M. Therefore, it should take no more than one more month for Eclipse to earn another $1.97M and pass $300M.

Keeping track of records, the film with the least number of days to reach $250M was The Dark Knight, which hit $261,847,503 after eight days. New Moon is in 13th place, having taken 16 days to reach $251,530,186. Eclipse lands just behind it in 14th place, taking 16 days to reach $251,371,417. This puts the film ahead of Shrek the Third, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, and Iron Man 2, which all took 17 days to hit $250M.

So far, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has set all-time box office records for Opening Wednesdays, Single Day Wednesday Gross (non-adjusted), and Single Day Wednesday Gross (adjusted for inflation). It is in second place for Opening Day Gross, Single Day Gross, and Non-Opening Thursday Gross. Release records include Widest Releases, Widest Independent Releases, Widest Opening Independent Releases, Widest PG-13 Rated Openings, and Widest PG-13 Rated Releases.

There’s been quite a bit of discussion online regarding the film’s box office success. In particular, I wonder about the fairness of comparing the Twilight films against each other. Despite the fact that Eclipse is about to pass New Moon in domestic totals, the validity of judging one against the other is questionable given their strikingly different release schedules. As I’ve been saying since it opened, the idea was not to compete against or beat New Moon’s early numbers. That may be a goal of some people but the idea is to make money, and maybe set some records in the process.

First, remember that the film’s opening weekend started on a Wednesday. There is no way that a “weekend” that begins on a Wednesday can be compared to a “normal” 3-day weekend (when New Moon opened). So any comparison between the two based on how many “weekends” it’s been out simply isn’t valid. Next, look at the time of year the two films were released. New Moon came out during the Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday season. It’s a big time of year for Hollywood but still doesn’t compare to summer, when they put out their “tentpole” films — the potential blockbusters that will keep the studios in the black for another year. The competition is much more fierce beginning Memorial Day weekend through the 4th of July. It’s simply a different marketplace.

Is Summit happy with the film’s box office returns? I don’t know but I’m fairly sure they must be. Again, the goal was not to “beat New Moon.” That may be something the press or some others will latch on to but it may not be a fair comparison. It was very easy to compare Twilight to New Moon since they opened at the same time one year apart. Not so much New Moon to Eclipse. I think it’s wise to just see how the film does over time in its own right.

Now wouldn’t be a bad time to start planning for your DVD release parties. The street dates for Twilight and New Moon were both on day 121 of their theatrical runs (Saturdays). Following that line of thinking, Eclipse’s 121st day will be October 28th, a Thursday. The following Saturday would be October 30th — Halloween weekend. On the other hand, sources have told me that Summit is planning for a holiday season release — some say November while others say Christmas time.

Moviefone’s End of Summer Movie Poll

image

Summer is winding down, and as we prepare for the fall movie season, we’re taking one last look at the past three months at the theater.

Some have argued that this was the worst summer movie season in years, but with the mind-blowing ‘Inception,’ the Jacob-Bella-Edward love triangle in ‘Eclipse’ and the uber-success of ‘Toy Story 3,’ there were still a number of quality flicks for everyone to choose from.

But which films came out on top? Have your say in our official end of summer movies poll.

Vote for:

* Which movie was most worth your cash?
* What was the best chick flick?
* Who was summer’s hottest leading man?
* Who was your favorite on-screen couple?
* What was the summer’s best sequel/prequel?

E! Online: Rob Hits Jimmy Fallon’s Post-Emmy Bash

Rob Pattinson didn’t go to the Emmys, but he did attend an exclusive afterparty.

And while the scruffy Twilight hunk hit Jimmy Fallon’s post-show soiree at Trousdale without Kristen Stewart, he did have an unknown blonde by his side.

But relax, Robsten fans. The woman in question is actually…

…his agent, Stephanie Ritz.

A source tells me that a R.Pattz was just hanging with some friends. “They were super low-key and kept to themselves,” the source says.

Host Fallon seemed happy with his performance (as were critics), telling photogs that the hightlight of the night was getting everyone involved in the opening song and dance number.

“I paid them nothing,” he confessed on his way inside the party. “They just did it for fun.”

Hot couple Heidi Klum and Seal also made the scene and danced together to Jay-Z tunes. Emmy winner Kyra Sedgwick and her hubby Kevin Bacon came together to celebrate, while Tina Fey and Amy Poehler shared a booth and showed off their moves.

Matthew Morrison and Kate Gosselin rolled solo (unless you count her ubiquitous bodyguard) and made Jimmy’s bash their final stop of the night.

Kristen Stewart Is Bruised In EXCLUSIVE 'Welcome To The Rileys' Stills

With autumn quickly approaching, we’re gearing up for warm wool sweaters, copious cups of cocoa and, perhaps most importantly, some seriously great film releases. All week long we’ll be rolling out exclusive clips, photos and interviews as part of our Fall Movie 2010 Preview Week, so stay tuned!Today, we got our hands on three pics from a movie we’ve been talking about forever (well, maybe more like nine months or so): Kristen Stewart’s gritty film “Welcome to the Rileys.” Kristen plays runaway teen prostitute Mallory, who’s taken in by James Gandolfini to help him ease the pain of his own daughter’s death.

In the above pic, Kristen is examining her bruised face after what we can only assume was some kind of fight/beating. Peeking in on her is Melissa Leo who plays James’ wife, Lois, in the film. When we caught up with Kristen earlier this year to discuss the role, she said she had never “felt so personally involved in something” as she did with “Welcome to the Rileys,” adding that making the movie definitely changed her life. “I think I’m just a little bit more sensitive,” she said. “I’m so, if you looked at a girl wrong now, I would fly across the room and kill you.” Wow, watch out for KStew!

Breaking Dawn Pre-Production has begun

image

Here is the first official “set report” though it is more of a pre-pre-production report…
I got an email over the weekend from a fellow Twilight fan in Baton Rouge. Here are some details she sent me regarding Pre-Production of Breaking Dawn:
1)studio is secure and gated but busy.2)a lot of construction going on in the lots (unsure if related to filming or not, it seems likely)3)they are using the lot across from studio also (for storage and vehicles at this point)4)Bill Condon has been spotted in town and is staying at a private location not too far from studios

A Scruffy Robert Pattinson Surfaces in Hollywood on Emmys Night!

Robert Pattinson didn’t attend last night’s Emmys in LA, but he was out making the club rounds — he started the evening at the Soho House before moving on for more partying at Trousdale. He held down the fort in California while Kristen Stewart took care of business in Argentina. Robert didn’t have much facial hair a few weeks ago when he was spotted visiting and cuddling with Kristen in Canada, but yesterday he debuted some serious scruff. His new look didn’t stop fans from trying to get autographs, though, as he went between spots with a blond friend by his side.
